Newswise — (Baltimore, MD) – On Friday, March 18th, 2016, Mercy Medical Center gynecologist and nationally recognized robotic surgery expert Dwight D. Im, M.D., FACOG, performed the world’s first “single site” gynecologic surgery using the da Vinci® Xi® Single-Site instruments and accessories, developed by Intuitive Surgical Inc., the global leader in robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery. Intuitive Surgical had just announced on Wed., March 16th that the United States Food and Drug Administration had provided 510(k) clearance for the company’s da Vinci® Xi® Single-Site system.

Intuitive Surgical’s Single-Site technology enables surgeons to operate through a single incision in the patient’s umbilicus (i.e. bellybutton) during cholecystectomy, benign hysterectomy and salpingo-oophorectomy procedures. Dr. Im performed a partial hysterectomy, removing the patient’s uterus, cervix and fallopian tubes, while preserving the ovaries.

Dr. Im noted that the new robot offers the surgeon improved vision, an easier set-up and greater access to the patient’s surgical field.

“Easier to see, easier to utilize the instrumentation to perform minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. The robot’s single-site technology provides a brighter, higher resolution view of the surgical field, highlighting blood vessels and other tissues. The new arms of the da Vinci Xi offers a greater range of motion. For the patient, this means almost no scarring, less time spent in the operating room, and a faster recovery,” Dr. Im said. The da Vinci Xi 8 mm endoscope provides the surgeon a brighter, higher resolution view of the surgical field with integrated Firefly® fluorescence imaging. A single-fin attachment system makes docking easier and faster with added Single-Site features like guided setup to improve OR team usability. The boom-mounted design improves access around the patient with redesigned arms to provide greater range of motion.

Dr. Dwight Im is among the most widely recognized gynecologic oncology robotic surgeons and was the first surgeon to be named a "Gynecologic Oncology EpiCenter Surgeon" for the da Vinci robot. In 2015, Dr. Im was one of eight doctors elevated to Mentor Status in Gynecology and Gynecologic Oncology. Dr. Im trains doctors from around the world in advanced, precision robotic surgery.
