New Drug For Malaria

There's a new weapon to prevent malaria in travelers, says David Freedman, M.D., director of the UAB Travelers Health Clinic. Malarone(tm), which recently received FDA approval, is now available in pharmacies.

It is the first new malaria drug in the United States in more than 10 years and represents a real advance in convenience and tolerability. "Malarone seems to be without the central nervous system and gastrointestinal side effects associated with older drugs and is just as effective. And, it can be stopped just seven days after return as compared to one month with other drugs."

Ten million Americans who travel to malarious areas each year are at risk for this potentially life-threatening disease for which there is currently no vaccine.
