Newswise — The One Love Foundation, in collaboration with Jacquelyn Campbell, PhD, FAAN, of the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, has launched One Love Lite Version No. 2, an update to their original Danger Assessment application for smartphones. Timed to arrive with the school year, the free app is another part of the One Love Foundation's Be 1 for Change campaign to combat relationship violence in the United States. The goal of Be 1 for Change is to educate, create awareness, and provide resources for people 16 to 24 years old.
The One Love app, launched in September 2012, is a revolutionary tool that allows young victims of relationship violence to assess the threat and seek help. Though geared toward the victim, family and friends also may use the One Love app with victims to help them understand how dangerous it is to remain in a relationship and guide them to appropriate resources.
One Love Lite Version No. 2 incorporates a live chat function that provides 24-hour support by phone through a partnership with LoveisRespect.org. Users also can now re-access the app at any time by entering a pin number--the original app erased itself after first-time use.
Campbell, a national leader and researcher in the field of intimate partner violence, has worked since May 2012 to develop the app in collaboration with and through funding by the One Love Foundation.
One Love Lite Version No. 2 is the “next step in providing teens and young adults with the safest, most up-to-date means to understand and combat relationship violence," said Sharon Love, co-founder of the One Love Foundation.
According to Campbell and her website, DangerAssessment.org, every year 3 million to 4 million women in the U.S. are abused and 1,500-1,600 are killed by their abusers. The challenge for those who encounter abused women is to identify those with the highest levels of danger. For over 20 years, a form of the Danger Assessment Instrument has been used by law enforcement, healthcare professionals, and domestic violence advocates.
The app for iPhone and Android is available on the One Love Foundation website at JoinOneLove.org. The organization is named in honor of Sharon Love’s daughter Yeardley, who died in 2010 at the hands of an estranged boyfriend.
