Readying States Against Bioterrorism

Public health schools at UAB and Tulane University are partnering to establish the South Central Center for Public Health Preparedness. It is one of 15 national centers being funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to enhance the nation's bioterrorism preparedness. The center will serve Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas. "It will serve as a resource to help states identify, assess and improve preparedness in the areas of bioterrorism and emerging infections," says Michael Maetz, V.M.D., chair of epidemiology and international health at UAB and co-director of the center. "Ensuring states are prepared is of utmost importance to the federal government."
