Newswise — WASHINGTON— RTI International is hosting the Emerging Science in State and Community Tobacco Control Policy and Practice Forum that will explore critical needs in state and community tobacco control at the National Press Club in Washington D.C., May 4.
The policy and practice forum will include policymakers, advocacy groups, federal agencies, partners and press. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. and the program begins at 1:00 p.m.
RTI serves as the Coordinating Center for the State and Community Tobacco Control (SCTC) Research Initiative. Funded by the National Cancer Institute since 2011, the initiative addresses critical gaps in state and community tobacco control, as well as fosters partnerships between public health organizations and tobacco control programs through research and dissemination.
Investigators and partners from the State and Community Tobacco Control Research Initiative will present how their research has informed tobacco control policy and practice locally and nationally, as well as deliberate how to best fill holes in current tobacco policy. A moderated panel will discuss the persisting critical needs in tobacco control amongst the shifting landscape in tobacco products and use.
The forum will be moderated by Howard K. Koh, M.D., M.P.H., former Assistant Secretary for Health for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The panel also includes Matthew Farrelly, Ph.D., Chief Scientist and Senior Center Director at RTI, who serves as the Project Director for the SCTC Coordinating Center.
