Newswise — (MEMPHIS, Tenn. – September 3, 2013) St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will host a webcast about the late-effects of childhood cancer and its treatment Saturday, September 7, at 9 a.m. CST. The webcast is part of the hospital’s Survivors’ Day 2013. The event welcomes St. Jude patients of all ages back to the hospital to reconnect with staff and former patients, attend educational workshops and participate in special activities that commemorate their battle against cancer.
Viewers worldwide can tune into the webcast for a panel discussion featuring stories and a question-and-answer session with St. Jude childhood cancer survivors. Childhood cancer survivors, regardless of where they were treated, are encouraged to watch the webcast.
Actor and author Hill Harper is the celebrity keynote speaker for this year’s event. Harper, best known for his role as Dr. Sheldon Hawkes in the CBS drama CSI: NY, will share his personal journey as a cancer survivor.
The United States is home to an estimated 395,000 childhood cancer survivors. With long-term survival of pediatric cancer patients now surpassing 80 percent, the survivor community will continue to grow. Childhood cancer survivors face unique health concerns, and being knowledgeable about health risks is the key to enhancing long-term wellbeing.
