Statement from ISSCR President Elaine Fuchs, PhD, regarding the U.S. district court preliminary injunction stopping federal funding of hESC research

Newswise — “Embryonic stem cells are not human embryos; they are cultured cells grown in the laboratory. Obama's ruling helped government-funded U.S. researchers by enabling them to use the best possible existing embryonic stem cell lines in conducting their research. The court decision is unfortunate, because it threatens to impede the progress of regenerative medicine in our country. Stem cell therapies have the potential to treat many devastating human diseases for which we presently have no cures. To advance the potential of stem cells for regenerative medicine, researchers must be able to study the best possible embryonic stem cell lines and uncover their special ability to make every cell type of our body. Without government funds to support this research, scientists and physicians will be impeded in developing the blueprint for stem cell therapies that will save lives. The ISSCR hopes that this ruling can be challenged and reversed."
