The Scooter Menace

Emergency room visits due to injuries related to the new, popular, lightweight scooters have increased 700 percent since spring, says Tara Dortch, of UAB's Think First Injury Prevention Program.

"The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says that there have been more than 4,000 scooter-related injuries in August alone. Riders need to protect themselves with the same gear worn by in-line skaters: a helmet that covers the brain stem and knee and elbow pads."

Dortch also says kids should not ride at night and should stay on smooth, paved surfaces that are free of other vehicles. And, obey one cardinal rule: "Stay out of the street!"
