Instead of giving all trick-or-treaters candy, a North Dakota woman has developed a new approach to the childhood obesity battle: the children she deems “moderately obese” will receive a note for their parents addressing this. But, this could be very damaging to a child, explains Stephenie Wallace, M.D., University of Alabama at Birmingham assistant professor of pediatrics and medical director for the Children’s Clinic for Weight Management at Children’s Hospital.

“On Halloween, kids are walking around the neighborhood and probably getting more activity in that night than they do on other nights,” Wallace said.

“I would encourage the neighbor to consider other ideas that would more positive, such as starting a neighborhood walking school bus program or giving non-candy treats to all kids regardless of size,” Wallace said, adding, “With her passion, she could be a great role model for healthy eating and activity and that would make a stronger statement than her letter.”
