SCHOOL OF NURSING RESEARCHER HELPS STOP ADDICTIONS EARLY

Dr. Andrea Kovalesky, associate professor at the Univesity of Washington -- Bothel campus, has focused much of her research around mothers with addictions, a situation she saw frequently as a pediatric nurse. She points, "20 years ago, many children coming from broken homes and environments of addiction received no treatment. Today, those very same people are adults — many of them mothers — who are grappling with their own addiction problems."

This observation led her to help put together programs for teachers at all grade levels that will assist students with the effects of problematic use of alcohol, including fetal alcohol syndrome, the effects on students of alcohol abuse in the home and school-age drinking.
