Newswise — The Association of American Cancer Institutes (AACI) Clinical Research Initiative (CRI) will convene its seventh annual meeting July 8-9 in Chicago. This year’s meeting will focus on recent advances in immunotherapies for cancer and their impact on conducting cancer clinical trials.

The goal of the AACI CRI annual meeting is to improve clinical trials management at cancer centers. To achieve this, the meeting provides opportunities for more than 200 clinical research office leaders to develop solutions to common challenges and to share best practices.

Program Highlights

The CRI Steering Committee, chaired by Tony Reid, MD, PhD, UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center, has assembled an outstanding array of speakers and compelling topics. The meeting will feature a plenary session moderated by Dr. Paul Martin from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center addressing advances being made in treating cancer through the use of immunotherapy. Presenters Aude G. Chapuis, MD, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Annick Desjardins, MD, FRCPC, Duke Cancer Institute, Duke University Medical Center and Jason Luke, MD, FACP, The University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center will explore the mechanisms for, and challenges of, using immunotherapy in clinical trials. The plenary session will be followed by a presentation about “basket" and "umbrella" trials (e.g., Lung MAP, ALCHEMIST, NCI Match) where panelists will discuss why these types of trial designs are effective in treating cancer, and strategies to reduce the associated regulatory burden and patient enrollment challenges. Other sessions will address management of trial compliance, promoting clinical research training, and ways to improve patient safety. There will also be presentations of abstracts from several AACI cancer centers illuminating clinical research management challenges and solutions.

The two-day meeting will convene cancer center clinical research office administrative and medical directors, and associated support personnel, as well as AACI Sustaining Members, AACI Corporate Roundtable members and representatives from industry.
