Newswise — Nagy Mekhail, MD, PhD, professor at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, has been selected to receive the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA) 2019 John J. Bonica Award. The award is named for Dr. Bonica, who championed the collaboration of multidisciplinary specialists in the evaluation and treatment of patients with pain. Awardees embody the ideals of John Bonica and his passion for pain medicine as manifested through their contributions to research, teaching, and clinical practice.

“Dr. Mekhail is exactly the type of physician who exemplifies the vision of Dr. Bonica and has exceled in aspects of education, research, and patient care throughout his career,” wrote nominator Robert Bolash, MD, assistant professor of anesthesiology at Lerner College of Medicine. “He is equally respected and admired by his patients and colleagues for assuming care of some of the most challenging patient cases referred from interventional pain physicians across the country.”

Dr. Mekhail will present the John J. Bonica Lecture, "Conventional Wisdom vs. Innovation in Pain Medicine" on November 16th in conjunction with the 18th Annual Pain Medicine Meeting being held at the New Orleans Marriott, New Orleans, LA.

Dr. Mekhail is also the director of Evidence-Based Pain Medicine Research and Education in the Department of Pain Management, and he was formerly the director and chairman of the Department of Pain Management at Cleveland Clinic from 1997-2010. He earned his bachelor of medicine and surgery with honors, master of science (anatomy), and doctor of philosophy degrees at the University of Ain Shams School of Medicine in Cairo, Egypt. His internship in internal medicine, residency in anesthesiology, and fellowship in pain management/neuroanesthesia were completed at the Cleveland Clinic.

An accomplished author and presenter, Dr. Mekhail has published more than 163 original articles and has instructed at more than 202 CME lectures and another 202 lectures as a visiting professor. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors and chair of the Examination Board of the World Institute of Pain, a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists Pain Committee, and a member of ASRA’s Committee on Research.

In 2010, Dr. Mekhail was awarded the Carl E. Wasmuth M.D. Endowed Chair in Anesthesiology and recognized by the Ohio Society of Interventional Pain Physicians as the first recipient of its achievement award. He was also recognized by the West Virginia Society of Interventional Pain Physicians in 2011 and the New York and New Jersey Interventional Pain Physicians in 2016.

Dr. Mekhail joins a prestigious list of pain medicine pioneers and leaders. Nominations for the John J. Bonica Award are accepted each spring for the subsequent year.
