Whether a reference to the 1979 Neil Young album or a product designed to protect metal surfaces, the phrase invokes the idea that corrosion from oxidation — the more general chemical name for rust and other reactions of metal with oxygen — is an inevitable, persistent process. But a new Binghamton University study reveals that certain features of metal surfaces can stop the process of oxidation in its tracks.

Don’t Worry, Be Happy; Just Go to Bed Earlier

When you go to bed and how long you sleep at a time might actually make it difficult for you to stop worrying, according to researchers at Binghamton University. The study, led by Binghamton Anxiety Clinic Director Meredith Coles and graduate student Jacob Nota, found that people who sleep for shorter periods of time and go to bed very late at night are often overwhelmed with more negative thoughts than those who keep more regular sleeping hours. The findings appear in Springer’s journal Cognitive Therapy and Research, being published this month.

What does it take to shoot a modern TV spot? Expensive equipment? A 40-man crew? A gargantuan budget? For Binghamton University, all it takes is some teamwork. The University’s new 30-second TV spot, “Binghamton – This Is Premier,” is a study in collaboration. The video, which showcases the University’s history using archive footage and props, period furniture and digital effects, was produced almost entirely in-house by students, faculty and staff.

Binghamton University Engineering Program Boasts 50 Percent Female Representation

Bucking the national and historic trend of disproportionately low female enrollment in STEM disciplines, Binghamton University announced this week that its new Executive Master of Science in Health Systems program based in Manhattan has so far enjoyed a consistent 50 percent female enrollment as it moves into building for its third year of operation. By comparison to national averages, this is more than double the available figures for STEM overall and specifically higher than the roughly 24 percent of female students reported in engineering coursework nationwide.

Binghamton University to Build a New $60 Million School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

The Binghamton University School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences will be constructed at 96 Corliss Ave. in Johnson City, one block off of Main St. near UHS Wilson Medical Center, a short drive from Lourdes Hospital and only 2.3 miles from the University’s main campus. The announcement was made Sept. 25, by Sen. Thomas W. Libous, accompanied by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo and Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger at a news conference at the Innovative Technologies Complex. The $60 million school will be constructed on a 5.49-acre parcel that is being purchased from Indian Valley Industries, which will relocate elsewhere in Broome County. Funding for the $2 million purchase comes from the $10 million the governor included in his executive budget for site acquisition and design work.

$8.2 Million Grant to Support Binghamton University's Alcohol Research Efforts

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded a five-year grant in the amount of $8.2 million to the SUNY Research Foundation in support of the Developmental Exposure Alcohol Research Center (DEARC), an alcohol research center led by Binghamton University. The grant, which starts Sept. 1, is a renewal of a five-year, $8.5 million grant awarded to the center in 2010. The grant will help fund research on the effects of developmental exposure to alcohol, focusing on the two primary times when the developing brain is exposed to alcohol —prenatally, via maternal use of alcohol, and during adolescence, when kids begin using alcohol themselves. At both of these times, the brain is developing and is sensitive to alteration by alcohol.
