A Mechanism Behind Negative Tumor Suppressor Gene Function Identified
Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey

The p53 gene has been a well-documented player in the prevention of tumors and is considered the most frequently mutated gene in human tumors. These mutations often can be caused by disruption in normal p53 function. A team of investigators, including those from New Jersey’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, has identified a mechanism that interrupts normal p53 function, thus causing negative impact which can lead to tumor development.

Life Lessons on Cancer Risk for Children Whose Parent Has Genetic Mutation
Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey

If you were found to be a carrier of a mutated form of the tumor suppressor genes known as BRCA1 and BRCA2, would you share that information with your child? While parents don’t always choose to share these test results with their offspring, they may choose to discuss related health information with their child. That is the result of a study by a team of investigators from The Cancer Institute of New Jersey and Fox Chase Cancer Center, whose findings suggest parents are using their mutation status as an opportunity to further educate their children on cancer risk reduction.

Process of Cancer Cell Self-Digestion is Target of New Cancer Therapies
Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey

In an effort to improve current anticancer treatments, investigators at New Jersey’s only NCI-Comprehensive Cancer Center have been targeting a process known as autophagy, in which cancer cells eat themselves as a measure of self preservation under stress. While preclinical studies have shown that inhibition of autophagy sensitizes tumor cells to treatment, researchers recently have had an opportunity to observe these effects in early-stage clinical trials involving a drug commonly used to treat malaria.
