A new study finds liver fibrosis - scarring of the tissue that occurs in many chronic liver diseases - is associated with reduced cognitive function and brain volume.

Researchers say patients with liver fibrosis showed worse memory and processing speed on average, as well as less gray matter volume in the hippocampus, thalamus, striatus, and brain stem.

Reserachers say inflammation is partly responsible for the link between brain health and liver health.
