Peat, Ph.D., with a grant for $3.75 million over five years to develop a training center for eating disorder-related education in the community. Eating disorders affect individuals worldwide, can be lethal, and represent an enormous cost in healthcare treatment and lost productivity. Scientists are beginning to understand how the gut microbiome—the bacteria that reside in the gastrointestinal tract—play a role in the development and treatment of eating disorders. The 2018 International Conference on Eating Disorders (ICED), hosted by the Academy for Eating Disorders April 19-21, 2018, at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, will address this important issue.
Eating disorders are serious illnesses with the highest mortality rate of all psychological disorders. Although it’s commonly believed they affect only young women, eating disorders actually affect all genders, ages, weights, and ethnicities. Traditionally, treatment for eating disorders has emphasized care by psychologists, physicians, and other health care providers. Unfortunately, however, most of those with eating disorders receive no treatment

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved an obesity treatment device, AspireAssist. The device, which consists of a tube placed inside the user’s stomach and connected to a pump, is designed to encourage the patient to drain a portion of the content after every meal in order to assist with weight loss—essentially enabling purging. Some have called it a mechanized form of the eating disorder, bulimia nervosa.
