Menopausal Women Experiencing Distressing Pain During Sex Suffer Due to Misperceptions

Results from qualitative research of postmenopausal women with vulvar and vaginal atrophy (VVA) show that they recognize the significant physical, emotional and psychological consequences of untreated dyspareunia (painful sex) yet they continue to suffer because of misperceptions about the condition and a general lack of understanding about treatment options. Sheryl A. Kingsberg, PhD, Chief of Behavioral Medicine in the Department of OB/GYN at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, will present the findings during an oral presentation, “Women’s Attitudes and Behaviors towards Vulvar and Vaginal Atrophy.” The presentation is scheduled for Oct. 1 at 4:45 p.m. PDT at The North American Menopause Society (NAMS) 2015 Annual Meeting.

First-of-Its-Kind Study From UH Seidman Cancer Center Finds Music Therapy Lowers Anxiety During Surgical Breast Biopsies

A first-of-its-kind study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology finds that music therapy lessened anxiety for women undergoing surgical breast biopsies for cancer diagnosis and treatment. The two-year study out of University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center involved 207 patients. The randomized controlled trial tested music therapy for anxiety management with women undergoing outpatient breast cancer surgery, and it is the largest study of its kind to use live music therapy in the surgical arena.

In a poster presentation, Jane Little, MD, of Seidman Cancer Center at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, and colleagues presented promising findings related to a novel biochip aimed at improving outcomes for patients with sickle cell disease. Although it is well-known that red cell interactions are important in sickle cell disease, the technology to date has not allowed physician-scientists to evaluate these properties on a large scale basis. This innovative biochip, which evaluates the biophysical properties of red blood cells in sickle cell patients, has the potential to become a standard test for monitoring the disease because of its widespread applicability and its use of only small volumes of blood.

Study Validates New Approach to High Blood Pressure

Trial results in a study published in Psychosomatic Medicine finds that mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) for hypertension resulted in substantial and statistically significant reductions in the primary outcomes, a -4.8-mm Hg reduction in systolic blood pressure (SBP) and a 1.9-mm Hg reduction in diastolic blood pressure (DBP) when measured in the clinic. The alternate arm of the trial involved only progressive muscle relaxation (PMR), which resulted only in a decrease of 0.7-mm in SBP and an increase of 1.2-mm Hg in DBP.

3D Mammography finds significantly more invasive cancers and reduces unnecessary recalls, according to a large, retrospective study published in June 25 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). The study features data from University Hospitals Case Medical Center Seidman Cancer Center. The study, the largest of its kind, focused on the impact of 3D mammography at a diverse range of sites across the U.S, looking at nearly half a million mammograms at 13 sites.
