An Ancient Killer Coelacanth From Canada

Coelacanths are iconic fishes, well-known as ‘living fossils.’ A new extinct coelacanth is causing waves in the scientific community because it had a tuna-like forked tail and was probably a fast-moving, shark-like predator. This contrasts with living coelacanths, which are slow-moving fishes with peculiar broad tails bearing 3 lobes.

Paleontologists Give Madagascar’s Fiercest Dinosaur a Hand

66 million years ago, the fearsome, meat-eating dinosaur Majungasaurus crenatissimus prowled the semi-arid lowlands of Madagascar. Its powerful jaws bristled with bladelike teeth, and its strong legs terminated in formidable claws, and it was known to engage in cannibalism. A new study shows that there was one part of its dreadful form that was not to be feared: its arms.

Giant Extinct Rabbit Was the King of Minorca

On the small island of Minorca researchers have unearthed an enormous fossil rabbit skeleton. This massive rabbit, aptly named the Minorcan King of the Rabbits (Nuralagus rex), weighed in at 12 kg (26.4 lbs)! — approximately ten times the size of its extinct mainland cousin (Alilepus sp.) and six times the size of the living European rabbit, Oryctolagus cuniculus.
