From the authors: “Female patients show downregulated baseline ACE2 expression compared with males, which may reflect elevated circulating [estrogen] concentrations in females. Perhaps more interestingly, [testosterone] significantly upregulated ACE2 expression in human [airway smooth muscle] cells.”
