Breast Cancer Detection in Women Under 40: Ultrasound Is Better Than Mammography for Women with Symptoms of Possible Cancer
Seattle Cancer Care Alliance

How Seattle Cancer Care Alliance implemented Washington’s Death with Dignity Act
Seattle Cancer Care Alliance

By the end of 2011, most of the 255 Washington residents who received a prescription for lethal medication to end their lives under the state’s Death with Dignity Act had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Of those, 40 were patients at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, part of the Pacific Northwest’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. Because several states are considering similar Death with Dignity laws, and because such legislation disproportionately affects cancer patients and their families, SCCA conducted a study to describe the institution’s implementation of the Washington state law and its experience with patients who chose to participate. The study’s findings are published in the April 11, 2013 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.

Tomosynthesis Improves Cancer Detection in Women with Dense Breast Tissue
Seattle Cancer Care Alliance

As of October 2014, 19 states have enacted laws requiring women to be directly informed if they have dense breasts and would benefit from supplemental screening. However, the recommended type of supplemental screening for women with dense breasts remains unclear. With 15 additional states considering similar laws and federal legislation introduced, physician scientists at the University of Washington and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) investigated the potential impact of supplemental screening for women with dense breast tissue. The study’s findings are published this month online in the journal Radiology.

Coding, Machines May Decrease False Positives in Breast Cancer Screenings
Seattle Cancer Care Alliance

Machine learning (or coding) could help reduce false positives from mammography screening, according to an article study published online in the May 4, 2017 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Oncology. The national coding competition known as the DREAM Challenge, launched during the inauguration of Vice President Biden’s Cancer Moonshot Challenge, may help mitigate this harm associated with routine screening.
