Subak reporters, based on a special class of what are known as fluorescent silver nanoclusters, change color when they detect that so-called nuclease digestion has happened, which is one of the critical steps in identification of disease-causing pathogens, such as COVID-19. These Subak reporters are much more cost-effective than the way nuclease activity is now detected. Credit: Tim Yeh/The University of Texas at Austin
