Ryan Tobiasz, Psy.D.

Program Director and Associate Professor, Forensic Mental Health Leadership

Adler University

Schizophrenia,Self-harming Behaviors

Mental health needs within the forensic, correctional, and criminal justice systems continue to rise, as evidenced by some cities and states developing co-responder programs – pairing officers with behavioral health clinicians during emergency calls. It is estimated that approximately 20% of jail inmates today have a serious mental illness (based on a 2009 study published in Psychiatric Services). Historically, access to mental health care for those in correctional and criminal justice systems has been limited, something Ryan Tobiasz, Psy.D., LPC, is focused on changing through his academic work and research.

Dr. Tobiasz implemented and facilitated the first evidence-based practice treatment groups, including Illness Management and Recovery and Social Skills Training for Schizophrenia, during his time with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. He also co-facilitated Dialectical Behavioral Therapy treatment groups for those who engaged in significant self-harmful behavior. He has given numerous professional presentations and has trained correctional staff members on topics including suicide prevention, ethical dilemmas within correctional facilities, cultural competency, and working with offenders with mental illness.

His teaching, research, and clinical work strive to address the challenges associated with jails and prisons increasingly becoming mental health facilities. Dr. Tobiasz’s primary research includes evidence-based practice for individuals with schizophrenia.

Dr. Tobiasz earned his Psy.D. in clinical psychology and a Master of Arts in forensic psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. He earned bachelor’s degrees in psychology, behavioral science, and law from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Prior to entering academia full-time, Dr. Tobiasz served as a psychological associate within the Wisconsin Department of Corrections at several maximum-security institutions.

Kaiyu Guan has been on the Faculty of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign since 2016, when he arrived as a Blue Waters Professor for the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). He is an Associate Professor in National Resources and Environmental Sciences as well as an affiliated professor in both computer science (since 2021) and informatics and geography (since 2016).

His interdisciplinary research brings together plant ecology, hydrology, biogeochemistry, and climate science satellite/airborne data, fieldwork, supercomputing, and machine learning to revolutionize how we monitor and model plant-water-nutrient interactions for agricultural ecosystems. His work aims to increase our society’s resilience and adaptability to maintain sustainability of ecosystem services, food security and water resources under the influence of climate change and anthropogenic drivers.

Dr. Guan provides solutions for real-life problems, such as large-scale crop monitoring and forecasting, water management and sustainability, and global food security. He uses satellite data, computational models, field work, and machine learning approaches to address how climate and human practices affect crop productivity, water resource availability, and ecosystem functioning.

Rachel Beller, MS, RDN, CEO & Founder of the Beller Nutritional Institute in Culver City, Calif, is a celebrity dietitian nutritionist who specializes in weight management and cancer risk reduction. A frequent guest on national television, she draws from peer-reviewed research to identify the foods and prep methods that she promotes in her books, online classes and speaking engagements, including the Living Beyond Breast Cancer community.

Her new book, SpiceRack: A Spicy Action Plan with Recipes to Reduce Breast Cancer Risk & Manage Your Weight, is designed to help women of all ages live a healthier and empowered life by explaining, in plain language, the latest scientific research on cancer and nutrition and translating that into simple recipes and quick tips for a healthier lifestyle.

Beller’s interest in nutrition for people in cancer treatment grew out of her family’s experience in the late 1990s when her father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and she found a lack of evidence-based guidance on a diet to support patients. Beller decided to conduct the research herself, working for 10 years at Cedar Sinai Medical Center and Providence St Johns in Los Angeles on the WINS trial, a low-fat diet for prevention of breast cancer recurrence.

Beller is an active resource for the Living Beyond Breast Cancer community to live healthier, nutrition-forward lives, regardless of diagnosis. She addressed LBBC’s Thriving Together 2023 Conference on Metastatic Breast Cancer in April, and hosted an LBBC webinar series on “Optimizing Your Nutrition and Detoxifying your Kitchen.”

Rachel Beller is available to comment on the weight challenges people affected by breast cancer face and how an informed diet can help manage them.
