Newswise — ARLINGTON, VA (October 30, 2018) – The American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists is pleased to announce the 2018 Distinguished Pharmaceutical Scientist award recipient, Nicholas A. Peppas, Ph.D. the Cockrell Family Regents Chair in Engineering, with appointments in Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Medicine and Pharmacy, at the University of Texas at Austin.

Professor Peppas is an internationally renowned pharmaceutical scientist who, for four decades, has made profound contributions to the pharmaceutical drug delivery field in the design of new pharmaceutical formulations and the oral delivery of drugs and therapeutic proteins. These contributions have led to the design, optimization, and commercialization of numerous products directly benefit patients.

He is a leading researcher, inventor, and pacesetter in the field of drug delivery and controlled release, a field that he nurtured into an established area of scholarly and applied research. He is also an international leader in biomaterials and bionanotechnology and has contributed seminal work in the fields of intelligent drug delivery systems and biomedical devices for feedback-controlled delivery. The author of over 1,600 publications and numerous proceedings papers and abstracts, Professor Peppas is the coauthor or coeditor of 37 books. Peppas is a member of the National Academy of Medicine, the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

The award, sponsored by a grant from AstraZeneca, is intended to recognize the accomplishments of an individual that has been outstanding because of the impact of his/her work in the pharmaceutical sciences, regulatory and/or technology. The work must have moved significantly the frontier of the field. It must be demonstrated by a continued effort that involves the testing and establishment of basic concepts. These concepts must have important scientific significance and have stimulated research investigations by others.
