Academy to survey women about foot pain, high heels

ROSEMONT, Ill.-To determine the prevalence of foot pain among women, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, in conjunction with the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS), is conducting a survey online through August 17 about women's foot problems, high heels and uncomfortable shoes.

Women can take the shoe survey by logging onto the Academy's website: www.aaos.org and selecting "Take Our Consumer Survey."

Included in the survey are questions such as: Do your feet hurt? How high are the heels that you wear? How many hours a day do you wear uncomfortable shoes? Have you changed your choice of shoe as a result of a foot problem?

The Academy will release the results of the survey this fall.

More than 43 million Americans--one out of every six people--have problems with their feet, mostly from shoes that do not fit properly. Foot problems cost the U.S. $3.5 billion each year. To help reduce the incidence of foot problems, the Academy has developed tips and guidelines for women, children, men, seniors, diabetics and athletes.

Log onto http://orthoinfo.aaos.org to download Academy fact sheets, brochures and booklets, free of charge. Foot problem prevention is part of the Academy's Prevent Injuries America! national campaign.

In addition to injury prevention information, the Academy's website details treatment of foot conditions such as bunions, hammertoes, corns, plantar fasciitis, heel pain and ankle sprains.

An orthopaedic surgeon is a medical doctor with extensive training in the diagnosis and nonsurgical as well as surgical treatment of the musculoskeletal system including bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves.

The 25,500-member Academy is a not-for-profit organization that provides education programs for orthopaedic surgeons, allied health professionals and the public. An advocate for improved patient care, the Academy is participating in the Bone and Joint Decade, the global initiative in the years 2000-2010 to raise awareness of musculoskeletal health, stimulate research and improve people's quality of life.

The American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, a national nonprofit medical specialty organization, launched its Foot Fitness for Life public education campaign to promote foot health. AOFAS brochures, guidelines and exercises for healthy feet are available, free of charge, online.
