ANDREA MITCHELL OF NBC NEWS TO SPEAK
AT SAMFORD COMMENCEMENT MAY 22

BIRMINGHAM---Andrea Mitchell, Chief Foreign Affairs and White House Correspondent for NBC News who covered Jesse Jackson's recent visit to Belgrade, will deliver the Samford University Commencement address.

Mitchell will speak during 10 a.m. exercises Saturday, May 22, at Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Center Complex Arena. A total of 845 Samford seniors will receive degrees during Commencement Weekend.

Mitchell has held the foreign affairs post since 1994, covering evolving foreign policy issues in the U.S. and abroad and the political implications of foreign policy and international crisis. She has also been NBC News' Chief White House Correspondent since 1993.

With NBC News since 1978, Mitchell has covered the White House and Congress since 1981. She traveled extensively with President Ronald Reagan and covered the Reagan summit meetings with Soviet Secretary General Mikhail Gorbachev.

Samford will hold Baccalaureate services Friday, May 21, at 8 p.m. in Wright Center at Samford. Dr. Rick Lance, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Alabama Baptist State Convention, will speak. Dr. Lance is a 1973 Samford graduate.

Samford's Cumberland School of Law will hold Commencement Saturday, May 22, at 3 p.m. in Wright Center. Judge James E. Hill of the U.S. 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Jacksonville, Fla., will speak.
