Winners of the DiscoverE Educator Awards to be Announced
Newswise — NEW YORK, Feb. 16, 2012 – ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) and the National Engineers Week Foundation are pleased to announce the inaugural DiscoverE Summit, an event that will showcase the importance and successes of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) educators with an emphasis on the “E” for engineering.
The DiscoverE Summit will be held on Feb. 22 at the Knight Studio at the Newseum in Washington, D.C., one of many events scheduled during the national observance of Engineers Week 2012, Feb. 19-25.
The proceedings will be moderated by news veteran and Emmy award winner, Miles O’Brien, lead science reporter for PBS NewsHour. Keynote speakers will include Subra Suresh, director of the National Science Foundation and Charles M. Vest, president of the National Academy of Engineering.
The Summit will feature the winners of the inaugural DiscoverE Educator Awards, which celebrate exceptional STEM educators who have had an extraordinary impact on their students. Three of the nation’s top STEM educators, selected by a committee of distinguished national education, engineering and business leaders, will be announced and honored for their achievements and will use this forum to share their inspiring stories.
The event will also present two panel sessions. The first panel, “Teachers and Educators,” will feature STEM education change-agents who will share the stories behind their success. Panelists include the winners of the DiscoverE Educator Awards and Linda Katehi, chancellor, University of California, Davis. Corey S. Powell, editor-in-chief, DISCOVER magazine, and John Manahan, special assistant, Office of the Deputy Secretary, U.S. Department of Education will also deliver remarks.
The second panel, “Volunteers and Partners,” will address the important role that volunteers and partnerships play in advancing STEM education. Panelists include Diane Melley, director, Corporation Citizenship & Corporate Affairs, IBM; Leland Melvin, associate administrator of Education, NASA; Michael Smith, deputy executive director, National GEM Consortium, and Rosemary Truglio, vice president Research & Education, Sesame Workshop.
The program will also include comments by Victoria A. Rockwell, president, ASME, and co-chair of Engineers Week 2012 and Thomas G. Loughlin, executive director, ASME
