Forty years ago, Dr. Nancy Spencer, an associate professor in the School of Human Movement, Sport and Leisure Studies at Bowling Green State University (Ohio), called the lines for the famous "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match between Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King.

Spencer is available to comment on the anniversary of this event and has done additional research on the match.

Among the articles she has written is one entitled "Reading between the lines: A discursive analysis of the Billie Jean King vs. Bobby Riggs 'Battle of the Sexes.'" The article appeared in the Sociology of Sport Journal in 2000.

Her research focuses on meanings of gender, race and nation in the making of celebrity in professional women’s tennis. She has published research articles in the Journal of Sport & Social Issues, Sociology of Sport Journal, Journal of Sport Management and Sport Marketing Quarterly. She also published a chapter about Venus Williams in "Sport Stars: The Cultural Politics of Sporting Celebrity." Spencer is past-president of the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport (NASSS) and served on the Editorial Board for the Sociology of Sport Journal.
