ST. JOSEPH, Minn., May 13, 1999 -- Bishop John R. Kinney will deliver the 1999 spring commencement address to the College of Saint Benedict graduating seniors on Saturday, May 22, at 2 p.m., in the Clemens Field House in CSB's Haehn Campus Center.

The title of Bishop Kinney's commencement talk is "Great Expectations."

At the commencement ceremony, Bishop Kinney will be presented the President's Medal. The President's Medal is given by the college to persons who have distinguished themselves through individual achievement. The award recognizes the talents, efforts and dedication required to meet new challenges. The President's Medal is bestowed on nationally known and respected individuals in recognition of outstanding achievement. The award symbolizes the college's dedication to the pursuit of excellence and the attainment of personal triumphs.

Kinney was appointed Bishop of of Bismarck, N.D., June 28, 1982, and appointed the Bishop of the St. Cloud Diocese, Minn., May 9, 1995, by Pope John Paul II.

He currently serves on the board of directors at the St. Paul Seminary and the Catholic Mutual Relief Society of America. He is also a member of the board of overseers for the school of theology at Saint John's Seminary, Collegeville, Minn.

Sally Koering of Apple Valley, Minn., senior English and theater major, will give the senior statement titled "Living Integrity: Our Part of the Whole."

W. Clark Hendley, provost for academic affairs, will present the graduation candidates, and CSB President Mary E. Lyons will confer degrees at the ceremony.

Margaret D. Winter of Richfield, Minn., CSB senior development officer, will welcome candidates to the alumnae association. CSB will award degrees to 449 seniors at spring commencement.

The College of Saint Benedict is a private, nationally recognized women's, residential, liberal arts, Catholic Benedictine college of 1,900 students, located in St. Joseph, Minn., joined in a coordinate mission with Saint John's University for men. As the only Catholic all-women's Baccalaureate I college, Saint Benedict's is unique in its commitment to gender-specific education within a coeducational environment.
