Newswise — The evolution of genocide as an international crime and the erosion of sovereign immunity as a defense to prosecution are the heart of the latest book by Michael J. Kelly, a professor of international law at Creighton University School of Law.

The book, titled "Nowhere to Hide: Defeat of the Sovereign Immunity Defense for Crimes of Genocide and the Trials of Slobodan Milosevic and Saddam Hussein" (Peter Lang Pub. 2005), discusses the trials of both leaders for crimes of genocide, one before an international tribunal, the other before a domestic court of his own countrymen.

"How do you grasp the essential characteristics of the crime of genocide and understand how heads of state like Slobodan Milosevic and Saddam Hussein can stand trial on charges of perpetrating this heinous crime?" said David Scheffer, former U.S. Ambassador at Large for War Crimes Issues (1997-2001). "Read Michael J. Kelly's book, Nowhere to Hide. Kelly explores the history of genocide and the contemporary enforcement of international law to prosecute leaders charged with masterminding criminal assaults. Whether the centuries-old defense of sovereign immunity can shield such leaders is one of Kelly's primary targets of inquiry."

The book includes a foreword by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, " Professor Kelly's book, along with those of other like minded international scholars, helps us to chart that path and reminds us that we are all in this together. I am happy to be associated with this work, and implore the reader to remember the sacrifices of those who came before."
