Newswise — NEW YORK, NY, May 3, 2012 – Charity Navigator, America’s premier independent charity evaluator, has awarded the Cancer Research Institute (CRI) its highest charity rating, four out of four stars, placing it among the top organizations out of more than 5,400 U.S. charities and distinguishing CRI as one of the highest-rated cancer charities.

The Cancer Research Institute achieved the coveted 4-star rating by demonstrating efficient use of donor dollars, growing its programmatic capacity, and providing free and easy access to important financial and other key business documents that inform donors about how and where CRI spends their donations as well as how those decisions are made, who makes them, and how they are accounted for.

“We are pleased and proud to once again receive the highest rating from Charity Navigator,” said Jill O’Donnell-Tormey, Ph.D., chief executive officer and director of scientific affairs for the Cancer Research Institute. “Charity ratings help donors make difficult decisions about where to place their trust and money. The top ratings we receive from Charity Navigator and other charity evaluation organizations give our donors confidence that CRI’s priority is to make the most of their generous support and have the greatest possible impact in the fight against cancer.”

According to Ken Berger, president and CEO of Charity Navigator, the 4-star rating indicates that CRI adheres to good governance and other best practices that minimize the chance of unethical activities, and consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way.

The Institute also currently holds an “A” rating from the American Institute of Philanthropy, meets the Better Business Bureau’s Standards for Charitable Accountability and is a BBB Wise Giving Alliance Charity Seal Holder, and has been named a “top 100 charity” by GiveSpot.com.
