Newswise — The Graham School of General Studies at the University of Chicago announces the introduction of a certificate program in Diversity Management, to help organizations understand the forces at work in today's diverse workplace, and to develop the skill base needed to improve workplace diversity and support the success of diverse organizations.
The program provides students the opportunity to acquire the tools to succeed in their efforts to build diversity initiatives, support diverse workplaces, and extend their efforts outward through supplier diversity programs. Candidates for the program will come from all walks of corporate life, including organizational leaders, human resource professionals, and the managers and directors who implement policy.
"Today's business world is more diverse than ever, and the organizations most likely to succeed are those with the ability to harness their diversity to a competitive advantage," said Steve Laymon, associate dean for Business and Professional Programs at the Graham School. "The Diversity Management certificate program provides its students with the knowledge base and skill sets needed to build diversity initiatives and support diverse workplaces. This program is a must for any organization looking to succeed in today's business world," he added.
Program DetailsThe program is designed as a five or six seminar-long curriculum, and includes both required courses and electives. All classes are designed to focus on the intersection where managers and employees interact, in order to help students best understand the needs and demands of succeeding in a diverse, internationally based workplace. This will afford them the opportunity to develop their analytical skills " so they are equipped to identify tensions in the workplace " and also to fine-tune their emotional intelligence, so they can implement potentially divisive policies in a way that both satisfies and benefits their organization's employees.
Required classes will include:advanced issues in diversity;the law of equal opportunity, affirmative action, and diversity;strategic employee recruitment;training, development, and employee retention in the diverse workplace;communication in the diverse workplace; andresolving disputes in a diverse workplace.
Elective classes will include:statistical methods for measuring diversity and program effectiveness;diversity initiatives and supply chain partners;benefits and compensation in the diverse workplace; andadvanced topics in diversity for senior managers.
Advisory BoardIn order to help ensure that the Certificate in Diversity Management program meets the highest standards for which the Graham School of General Studies is known " including curriculum development, academic excellence, and issues management " the Graham School worked with an advisory board consisting of industry leaders works to develop the Certificate program.
Course LocationAll courses meet at the University of Chicago Gleacher Center, 450 N. Cityfront Plaza Dr., one block east of North Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago.
