COMPUTER ADAPTIVE GMAT READY FOR OCTOBER LAUNCH

WASHINGTON, May 8, 1997 -- A computerized version of the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) -- the standardized exam taken by applicants to graduate business programs worldwide -- is scheduled for introduction on October 1, 1997. The new GMAT CAT (Computer Adaptive Test) will replace the current pencil-and-paper version of the test throughout North America and at selected international testing centers.

"The GMAT CAT will offer significant advantages to test-takers, and to the graduate business programs that use the exam in their selection process," said David Wilson, President of the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), the global management education organization that administers the GMAT to more than 200,000 people around the world annually.

"The most immediate benefit of the GMAT CAT is that it is available year-round, rather than at just four dates each year," said Wilson. "Applicants will be able to schedule a date and time more convenient for their work schedules, and can prepare for the test at their own pace. The CAT will also provide graduate business schools with a more even flow of applications throughout the year."

"Another major benefit is the speed with which applicants will get their scores," said Wilson. "Test-takers can receive unofficial verbal, quantitative, and total scores immediately after completing the CAT. Official scores will be sent to them within ten days of testing, once the essay section has been scored."

The pencil-and-paper GMAT is currently offered at nearly 1,000 locations in 170 countries. While the computerized test will not be immediately available at some international testing sites due to technological constraints, GMAC expects to have the CAT operational at all sites -- including campus-based centers, Educational Testing Service (ETS) field offices, and Sylvan Learning Systems, Inc. sites -- by 1999.

GMAC is an international organization whose mission is to extend awareness of and access to graduate management education. It is the pre-eminent provider of services valued by graduate management education institutions worldwide.
