CREIGHTON OFFERS NEW E-COMMERCE DEGREE

For Immediate Release, August 9, 1999

OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton University is offering a new master of science (MS) degree in electronic commerce that features a cutting-edge curriculum taught by a team of academic and business professionals.

The degree program offered through the College of Business Administration, with the support of The Joe Ricketts Center in Electronic Commerce and Database Marketing, will begin in January 2000. Students who wish to get a head start on the degree can enroll now for the fall semester to take classes that can be applied to the degree.

The Joe Ricketts Center was created in May of 1999 to partner with local and national businesses to share knowledge and create industry-specific programs. The Joe Ricketts Center plans to sponsor Internet business education programs and research as well as host national conferences on e-commerce and database marketing.

The Center also will publish a journal of electronic commerce.

The Ricketts Center is one of the nation's first university centers of e-commerce. It will combine studies in such areas as information systems & technology, marketing & management, accounting, computer science and law. The master's degree in e commerce will utilize all the resources the Ricketts Center brings to the University.

The Center was established thanks to a generous $1.46 million gift from Joe Ricketts, BA'68, chairman and CEO of Ameritrade Holding Corp.

The degree is designed to prepare students for leadership positions in the field of e-commerce as it relates to business, government and institutions. Students will be taught the strategies and tactics of e-commerce and how to apply them in the ever-changing business environment. Marketing, diagnostic techniques, strategic business models and the security, privacy and legal issues of e-commerce also will addressed in the curriculum.

The teaching staff for the master's degree in e-commerce will consist of academic faculty members from the College of Business Administration and from other departments in the University plus business executives with extensive experience in e-commerce. This partnership or team-teaching will bring "best practices" and a wealth of experience into the classroom. The students will receive hands-on experience from this teaching partnership that will combine the savvy of business professionals and the academic expertise of the faculty, utilizing projects and internships to enhance the student's education.

The master's degree in e-commerce requires 33 credit hours in addition to foundation courses. All students must complete 21 hours of core components, nine hours of electives and a three-hour e-commerce capstone project course. Courses are offered in the evenings and on weekends at the Creighton campus.
