Creighton University, which lost two alumni in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center, will pause with the rest of the nation to observe the first anniversary of the tragedy.
Creighton is inviting the entire Omaha community to join the campus for a memorial multi-faith prayer service at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11, 2002.
Creighton's Campus Ministry office is coordinating the daylong series of events during which the community will pay tribute to the victims and reflect.
Beginning at 8 a.m. on Sept. 11, 2002, and continuing on the hour throughout the day, the St. John's Church bells will toll in remembrance of the victims. The day will conclude with a communitywide multifaith/multimedia memorial prayer service in the V.J. and Angela Skutt Student Center Ballroom. The entire Omaha-Council Bluffs area community is invited to participate in the 7 p.m. service.
The attack nearly a year ago on the Pentagon took the life of Creighton alumnus retired Lt. Col. Gary F. Smith, BA'68. In the attack on the World Trade Center, CU alumnus Michael Tinley, BA'67, lost his life.
In commemoration of the September 11 attacks, all members of the Creighton Community are invited to submit poetry, art, prayers, or photos that offer a symbolic representation of the theme: "The Holy Spirit of God Overshadowing Us on the First Anniversary of September 11, 2001."
This work will be on display in the Student Center during the multifaith service.
Here is the schedule of Sept. 11, 2002, events on the Creighton campus:
8 a.m. - 8 p.m. - St. John's Church bells toll every hour on the hour to help us remember the presence of God on this first anniversary of the attacks. The final bell at 8 p.m. will conclude the service in the Student Center.
9:05 a.m. - "Stop in Action," a campus-wide moment of silence to honor those who perished on Sept. 11, 2001. The time is when the South Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed at 10:05 a.m. EST.
11 a.m. - Mass of the Holy Spirit at St. John's Church, with Creighton President Rev. John P. Schlegel, S.J., presiding and offering the homily.
7 p.m. -- Multi-faith Service in the Skutt Student Center Ballroom. This will be a multimedia memorial/prayer service open to everyone in the metro area.
