Newswise — Creighton University today announced plans to enhance and expand its relationships with the business community and explore new ways in which the University can make its intellectual resources accessible to companies.

A new office of Intellectual Resources Management (IRM), formerly known as the Office of Technology Transfer (OTT), will spearhead the effort. OTT has focused for more than a decade on bringing Creighton research discoveries to the marketplace through licensing agreements with businesses.

Expanding Creighton's relationships with businesses is a natural outgrowth of the University's longstanding commitment to meeting the needs of the communities it serves, said Cam E. Enarson, M.D., M.B.A, dean of the School of Medicine and vice president for health sciences.

"By sharing our research expertise and wealth of knowledge with companies, we are helping those businesses grow and succeed, which leads to a stronger economy that helps everyone and also leads to new products and services that contribute to a better world," he said.

Lee Fenicle, who managed OTT for more than 12 years, has been named director of Intellectual Resources Management.

"Our new name " Intellectual Resources Management " reflects Creighton's growing commitment to the world around us, as well as a growing trend among leading educational institutions to find new and better ways to interact with the business community," Fenicle said.

"We have created a convenient, new front door for businesses to use in working with the University" he added. "We are working closely with Creighton's College of Business Administration to offer a full menu of services to businesses."

One of IRM's key tools will be a new web presence (http://irm.creighton.edu ) offering businesses a complete menu of the Creighton resources available to them, including:"¢ Creighton's emerging technologies for transfer and use in new products and services"¢ Contract research"¢ Faculty expertise to meet a company's interests"¢ Creighton students and graduates for employment and internships"¢ Professional development programs"¢ Support for entrepreneurial initiatives

As part of its increased outreach efforts to stimulate business and economic growth, Fenicle said, IRM will host its Second Annual Entrepreneurship Conference, Sept. 25-26, at the Old Market Embassy Suites, 555 S. 10th St. The conference is designed to show inventors how to turn their discoveries and ideas into viable business ventures.
