Newswise — Creighton University President the Rev. John P. Schlegel, S. J., announced at the University's annual convocation today the results of the Willing to Lead campaign, the largest fundraising initiative in the history of the University. The record-setting campaign has raised approximately $400 million, exceeding its goal of $350 million.
"This has been an extraordinary time in the life of Creighton University. I am personally gratified by the unprecedented response of alumni and friends who share our student-centered vision to prepare and inspire tomorrow's leaders through quality education and patient care, an acclaimed faculty, student accomplishments and research," said Schlegel.
More than half of the campaign's total infused the University's academic mission by providing funding for hundreds of student scholarships and endowment support for faculty, academic programs and service projects—making an indelible mark on the quality of Creighton University. Fourteen new endowed faculty chairs and five new professorships were funded.
The remaining portion of the campaign's record-breaking results has allowed Creighton to achieve key elements of its dynamic and nationally recognized campus master plan—expanding by 40 acres and revitalizing the campus to create a 21st century living and learning environment and bringing together the cross-disciplinary learning and socialization needed in a modern university. The campus now spans 130 acres and numerous buildings have been renovated and/or constructed to support academics and student life.
"More than 60,000 donors contributed to this campaign, making a powerful statement about their trust in and the value they see in a Creighton education," said Lisa Calvert, vice president for University Relations. "Every gift and every donor have made a difference."
In discussing the future, Schlegel said, "Our board and donor community are pushing us to build on this momentum. Creighton is moving forward to meet our educational imperatives, mindful of the economy's impact and sensitive to what it means for donors, parents, students and patients. We have an extraordinary journey ahead of us, with extraordinary challenges and extraordinary opportunities. The University is being asked to look beyond what we have achieved and address those challenges and opportunities by doubling our efforts."
