Newswise — Canada's first Corporate Residency MBA is set to launch in 2009. The Dalhousie University program will allow 50 of Canada's best and brightest young people to gain real world work experience through an eight-month paid internship with North America's top employers.

"The Dalhousie Corporate Residency MBA will focus on recent undergraduates " the best and brightest in the fields of engineering, science and arts " and give them the opportunity to fast-track their business careers," said David Wheeler, Dean of the Faculty of Management. "For companies that partner with the program, the Dalhousie MBA will open a new avenue for recruitment that will bring top quality candidates to their organizations."

Unlike other MBA programs, which often incorporate shorter work terms or co-op placements, the Dalhousie Corporate Residency enables students to earn pro-rated, management level salaries over an eight-month period. The quality and quantity of work experience offered through the corporate residency benefits both student and employer—ideally the work term will result in a job offer for the student and a qualified, acclimatized asset to the workforce for the employer.

Employer partners were carefully selected to ensure a complete cross section of different professional sectors, including governmental agencies, banks and financial institutions, and major corporations. Students will have the opportunity to work with top employers including Proctor & Gamble, Shell, Canada Revenue Agency, BMO Financial Group, Scotiabank, IBM, and Emera. The program enables a three-pillar partnership between the employer, the student, and the university from start to finish and will ideally result in offers of employment.

In addition to the eight-month paid corporate residency, another differentiator between the new Dal MBA and existing programs at other schools is that there is no work experience required. Holders of Bachelor's degrees in any discipline are invited to apply for the program. Admissions are not based solely on academic standing and test scores, but also on the individual's employability and performance during an interview, similar to a job interview, which will be conducted prior to their admittance into the program.
