John Dinan, professor of politics and international affairs at Wake Forest University, can comment on the voting patterns of the North Carolina congressional delegation. He can also discuss the insights that might be gleaned from this week's negotiations for upcoming debt-ceiling and deficit-reduction battles, which are likely to be even more contentious and more difficult to resolve. Dinan says:“Both of the state's senators voted for the deal. But in the House, the deal was supported by five Democrats and one Republican and opposed by two Democrats and five Republicans. It is evident from these voting patterns is that Congress members' views about the deal did not fall neatly along party lines, with some of the most conservative members of the state delegation supporting the deal and others opposing it, and with similar divisions evident among the most liberal members of the state delegation."
