Expert: Fiscal cliff deal and what it means for progressive agenda in Obama’s second term
David Coates, Worrell Professor of Anglo-American Studies at Wake Forest University and author of the new book, “Pursuing the Progressive Case? Observing Obama in Real Time,” can comment on the fiscal cliff deal and its implications for Obama’s second term. He predicts that even though Democrats and Republicans were able to reach an eleventh hour agreement on addressing the automatic spending cuts, such bipartisanship will be less likely as Obama turns toward a more progressive agenda. Coates was invited to be a guest on HuffPost Live at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 4 to discuss his blog post “A Progressive Second Term?” about the potential for a progressive policy agenda in Obama’s second term.
Coates says:“The fiscal cliff settlement just bats the issue down the road, to the debt ceiling crisis looming at the end of February. That is the point at which we will test the progressive metal of the re-elected Obama.”
