Former Sen. George Mitchell, Chairman of the Irish Peace Negotiations, Offers Address at Fordham's 154th Commencement
Magician David Copperfield to Receive Honorary Degree

NEW YORK -- Former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell will offer the commencement address and receive an honorary doctorate of laws at Fordham's 154th Commencement, 1 p.m., Saturday, May 22, Rose Hill Campus. Mitchell, who served in the U.S. Senate from 1980 until his retirement in 1995, earned a Nobel Peace Prize nomination for his role in negotiating the still tenuous 1998 Northern Ireland peace agreement.

Internationally-known magician David Copperfield, will receive an honorary doctorate of humane letters. Throughout his career, Copperfield has escaped from Alcatraz and made the Statue of Liberty and an Orient Express car disappear. He has also levitated himself across the Grand Canyon and walked through the Great Wall of China.

Other honorary degree recipients will be the former Chairman of Fordham's Board of Trustees Robert E. Campbell, former vice chairman of the board of directors of Johnson & Johnson; Helen North, professor of classics emerita at Swarthmore College; and the Rev. John Leonard, S.J., a member of the faculty at Fordham Preparatory School for 50 years.
