Newswise — The Methodist Hospital System is ranked No. 10 among FORTUNE magazine's 2008 "100 Best Companies to Work For," making the list for the third year in a row.

Methodist is ranked in the top 10 for the second year in a row and is the highest ranked health care organization in the country, and the only health care system in Texas to receive the prestigious distinction this year. It is also the highest ranked company in Texas.

Only 13 companies in Texas were chosen. Methodist ranked No. 8 in the category of large companies and ranked No. 3 for the hiring of minorities, and No. 10 for the hiring of women.

The list and related stories appear in the Feb. 4 issue of FORTUNE, available on newsstands Jan. 28 and at www.fortune.com today.

The Methodist Hospital System, which includes a flagship teaching hospital, three community hospitals and a research institute, was awarded the high ranking for providing an exemplary workplace for employees.

Methodist was selected based primarily on a confidential survey sent to randomly selected employees, who were asked questions on the level of trust, pride and camaraderie within their workplace.

Methodist also submitted documentation about its work environment, from benefits to corporate policies to employee demographics. Methodist offers competitive benefits, diversity in the workforce, recognition for employees and a unique environment focused on integrity, compassion, accountability, respect and excellence.

"To be recognized by FORTUNE for three consecutive years is an extraordinary accomplishment. This honor was earned by our employees and physicians; it is a tribute to their hard work and dedication," said Ron Girotto, President and CEO of The Methodist Hospital System. "Everyone working here is committed to our patients, each other and our values, and that makes Methodist a remarkable place to work."

The FORTUNE website highlighted a $200 Kroger gift card that Methodist gave to each employee in 2007 and a program where employees volunteer to sit with dying patients in its coverage of ranked hospitals.

Recently, the Houston Business Journal also ranked Methodist as one of the best places to work in Houston. The Methodist Hospital consistently is ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of America's best hospitals, ranked in 14 of 16 adult specialties in 2007.

The Methodist Hospital System, with more than 10,000 employees, is made up of The Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center, Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown and The Methodist Hospital Research Institute. Methodist is affiliated with Weill Medical College of Cornell University and New York Presbyterian Hospital.
