Rhode Island School of Design's (RISD) Department of Furniture Design will showcase student work at the 42nd annual Salone Internazional del Mobile in Milan, Italy from April 9 - 14, 2003. RISD is one of twenty international schools, and one of three schools representing the United States who were invited to exhibit work. Representing over 1,400 exhibitors of international designers and manufacturers Salone Internazional del Mobile is the world's most widely visited furniture show in terms of exhibitors, area, and visitors, drawing over 185,000 in attendance.

Salone Internazional del Mobile is both a traditional trade event and at the same time a learning experience. RISD will be featured in SaloneSatellite, a special display area for schools, as well as young artists and designers who plan and market new designs but are not themselves manufacturers. SaloneSatellite offers exhibitors a showcase for their more daring ideas and concepts, while giving young artists and designers a truly unique opportunity for international exposure.

Ten diverse works created by nine furniture design students will be presented at RISD's booth in SaloneSatellite. Focusing on innovative seating and upholstery, along with an emphasis on manufacturing and production, RISD's exhibit will include:

- stereo speakers inspired by Hershey Kisses- felt bench inspired by the rural landscape of northeastern Pennsylvania, United States- stainless steel, canvas and foam felt chair designed for versatility- bench designed for a modern nomadic/mobile lifestyle- stainless steel and translucent plastic chair designed to be visually delicate and uplifting- bench fabricated with ash, Danish cord and concrete- award-winning lounge which provides comfort while maintaining flexibility- chair inspired by the geometry of the butterfly truss and kayak building systems- upholstered chair inspired by a ripened pomegranate and the artists' own artistic development- ottoman inspired by the Christmas cactus

The furniture design students in collaboration with students from RISD's Departments of Architecture, Interior Architecture, Industrial Design and Graphic Design designed the college's booth. The students used more than 185 customized milk crates to create a 'back wall' for the exhibit space by utilizing the crates to function as architectural items.
