Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient/Formersenator Bob Kerrey to Address Usu Graduates

Newswise — Bethesda, MD – More than 300 students in the nation’s most unique health sciences university will graduate Saturday, May 18, 2013, in ceremonies at the Daughters of the American Revolution Constitution Hall, Washington, D.C.

Military medical, nursing, dental, and clinical psychology students, along with military and civilian public health and biomedical sciences students are set to graduate from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences – the country’s only federal health sciences university, run by the Department of Defense. USU students are primarily active duty uniformed officers in the Army, Navy, Air Force and Public Health Service who have received specialized education in tropical and infectious diseases, preventive medicine, the neurosciences (to include TBI and PTSD), global health, and acute trauma care, in addition to their regular curriculum. A large percentage of the university’s nearly 5,000 physician and 600 advanced practice nursing alumni are supporting operations in Afghanistan, Africa and elsewhere, offering their leadership and expertise.

Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient and former U.S. Senator Joseph R. “Bob” Kerrey will address the students and guests for the University’s 34th commencement, speaking about the role graduates will play in caring for service members and their families at home and abroad. Kerrey, a Vietnam veteran and former Navy SEAL, was injured in combat and has a deep appreciation for the USU mission.

Deployed to Vietnam from January to March 1969, Kerrey was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his courageous actions leading a SEAL unit on a daring operation while under fire and seriously wounded by enemy grenade. After medical retirement from the Navy, he parlayed a successful business career into politics. He served as Governor of Nebraska from 1983-1987 and as U.S. Senator from Nebraska from 1989-2001. More recently, he served as President of the New School in New York City, from 2001-2010.
