UGA CONFERENCE TO FOCUS ON HIGHER EDUCATION AND THE LAW

ATHENS, Ga. -- The Institute of Higher Education at the University of Georgia will host the 31st annual Conference on Higher Education and the Law at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education on July 17 and 18.

The conference will present and examine new ideas and approaches for dealing with legal issues confronting college and university administrators today. Issues to be discussed include regarding critical law and policy issues in higher education, student life and academic affairs, accommodating students with disabilities, open records/open meetings, educational privacy rights and conflict management among other topics.

"The conference is geared toward serving the needs of college and university presidents and vice presidents," said Mel Hill of the Institute for Higher Education. "It will also be helpful for deans, faculty, students, consulting attorneys and other individuals concerned with the legal aspects of student, faculty and administrative behavior and interaction."

Mary Ann Connell, legal counsel for the University of Mississippi, will give the conference's dinner address on July 17 titled "Collegiality as a Factor in Tenure and Promotion Decisions." She will discuss the issues surrounding getting and keeping tenure in higher education.

"These and other issues will be questioned and examined in light of laws, judicial decisions and precedents, with an eye toward promoting a better understanding of the legal foundations and processes which are shaping critical higher education policy issues today," added Hill.
