The Staton - Greenberg Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of botanical images by the acclaimed photographer Imogen Cunningham. The public is cordially invited to attend an opening reception on Saturday, January 11 from 5-7 p.m. at the gallery, 15 West Anapamu Street in downtown Santa Barbara's cultural corridor. The exhibition will continue through March 2, 2003.

Cunningham (1883-1976), one of the premiere photographers of the 20th Century, began exploring and photographing botanical forms early on in her career. These photographs are portraits really, arranged, posed and thoughtfully considered to best capture personality. They exude grace and ask the viewer to carefully consider the notion of plant life. Indeed, these plants - the sharp geometry of the agave, the lush bloom of the magnolia - seemingly invite viewers into a world of quiet elegance.

The exhibition will include a selection of vintage prints, mid-career prints and images made posthumously by the Cunningham Estate in this exhibition. The lavishly illustrated, "Flora" (Bullfinch, 1996) by Richard Lorenz, will be available for purchase at the gallery.

Cunningham's work has been exhibited and collected by museums internationally. Her photographs are the subjects of numerous publications, including "Imogen Cunningham: On the Body" (Bullfinch,1998) by Lorenz, "After Ninety" (University of Washington Press, 1977), "Imogen Cunningham: Photographs (University of Washington Press, 1970) and many others. Staton - Greenberg Gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., and by appointment.

Visuals are available upon request.
