Newswise — Bethesda, MD-- The International Baccalaureate (IB) Organization has piloted a program for student teachers that introduces two new teaching credentials: the International Baccalaureate Certificate in Leadership Practice and the Advanced Certificate in Leadership Research. The IB Leadership certificates enable teachers to deepen their understanding of principles and practices that will equip them to inspire and guide school communities as they successfully implement and sustain IB programs in authorized IB World Schools. Jointly involved in the pilot are California State University San Marcos, U.S.A.; Flinders University, Australia; Hong Kong Institute of Education, China; Royal Roads University, Canada; and Oakland University, U.S.A.

Beginning in July, Royal Roads will incorporate the new IB leadership content into its Master of Arts in Educational Leadership and Management (MAELM).

“Leadership courses are a natural fit for Royal Roads,” says Cyndi McLeod, vice-president, global advancement, marketing and business development. “We’re proud to be partnering with the IB, a well-established and internationally recognized educational organization, to deliver these unique certificates. Students in MAELM will not only receive their Master of Arts leadership designation at completion of the program, they will qualify to receive one of the new International Baccalaureate Leadership Certificates, too.”

“By working closely with universities to embed the IB pedagogy in course content,” explains Anthony Tait, director of professional development at the IB, “the IB ensures that students receive rigorous inquiry into international education at the undergraduate and graduate levels.”

The International Baccalaureate, a nonprofit foundation, is committed to professional development for educators worldwide and offers four challenging education programs for a worldwide community of primary and secondary students and schools. Since 1968, IB programs have prepared students to live productive lives in a globalized and interdependent society, and to assert leadership roles in the creation of a more peaceful and harmonious world. The IB currently operates learning programs in more than 3,340 schools in 140 countries. To learn more, visit www.ibo.org.
