Newswise — As part of its 45th anniversary commemoration this year, the International Baccalaureate (IB) is introducing a new publication, the IB Journal of Teaching Practice, a research journal written by, reviewed by, and published for teachers.
Addressing the needs of thousands of IB educators worldwide—as well as the broader education community—the new journal extends the IB’s already strong commitment to high-quality professional development for teachers and school leaders. The journal, to be published online twice a year, supports teaching and learning in IB World Schools and beyond. This new international publication features practical research supported by rigorous analysis and reflection.
According to the journal’s co-editor Robert Harrison, the IB Journal of Teaching Practice is “based on the idea that teacher research is a powerful form of professional development that can have a positive impact on student learning and school culture.” Sharing best practices among educators has always been a distinctive feature of the IB community, he adds. To celebrate publication of the first issue, readers and prospective subscribers can download a sample article at no cost. The study, “Enhancing student motivation and performance: tools that develop and support informed choice,” is written by three teachers at Qatar Academy, an IB World School in Doha’s Education City. It describes strategies that enable students to make informed choices and increase ownership of their learning, and the benefits of such strategies. Other articles in the inaugural publication describe action research on intercultural learning strategies, well-being and academic performance, and teaching context in literature courses.
The journal is organized in three sections:• Action research reports—shorter works that describe how a teacher (or a team of teachers) has used action research to address an issue in classroom practice or school organization, leading to an improvement in teaching and learning.• Studies in practice—more academic articles that summarize current research or analyze the study of classroom teaching and school leadership.• Resource reviews—summarize and evaluate books, periodicals, websites, audiovisual products, documents and events that are relevant to IB programmes and international education.
“Subscribers will stay on the leading edge of research in education, the newest applications, methodologies, and best practices, otherwise unshared and largely unavailable,” says co-editor Marcia Behrenbruch.
