BATON ROUGE --U.S. Sen. John Breaux will deliver the commencement address at LSU's 240th graduation ceremony May 14 in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

Breaux, a native of Crowley, La., has been serving in the U.S. Congress since 1972. He represented the 7th District of Louisiana in the House of Representatives for 14 years before being elected to fill Sen. Russell Long's seat in 1986.

In 1993, Breaux was elected to serve as the chief deputy whip, a position he will continue to hold through the 106th Congress. He is a senior member of the Finance Committee, holds the position of ranking Democrat on the Special Committee on Aging and has taken a leadership role on the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.

Balancing an aggressive economic agenda with a strong environmental one, Breaux authored landmark legislation aimed at preserving America's wetlands. His legislation resulted in more than $50 million annually being marked for wetlands preservation. He also took a leading role in revising the Clean Air Act to reduce air pollution.

He was a founder and past chair of the Democratic Leadership Council, succeeding Bill Clinton in 1991. Breaux has been at the forefront of the effort to return the national Democratic Party to the center of American politics.

Breaux graduated from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette. He received his Juris Doctorate degree from the LSU Law School 1967. Breaux was re-elected in 1998 to serve his third term in the U.S. Senate, making him Louisiana's senior senator.
