Newswise — Andrew H. Orgel, the chairman and chief executive officer of 1Degree Media & Entertainment Company, has been named as the school’s first Assistant to the Dean for Industry Relations at Ithaca College's Roy H. Park School of Communications.

The new position was created to help the Park School forge new relationships with key industry, alumni and foundation leaders and to develop sources of funding, internships, jobs and curriculum innovation.

“In his previous role as chair of our National Alumni Advisory Board, Mr. Orgel was instrumental in designing and presenting our signature minicourse, “Media for Social Change,” and in making important research and job connections for students, alumni and faculty,” said Diane Gayeski, dean of the Park School. “In a rapidly changing media environment, his exceptional experience and connections will help us to generate donations of hardware and software, to underwrite faculty travel and research, and to provide new educational and networking opportunities for our alumni.”

Orgel is a 1974 television-radio graduate of the Park School. Following six years at CBS, he was part of the start-up executive teams that created and launched a number of cable television networks, including MTV, Arts & Entertainment, and Nickelodeon. Labeled by “Success Magazine” as the man who “made TV interactive,” he cofounded Interactive Enterprises, which joined with U.S. West (now Qwest) to create television services for digital broadband delivery by telephone companies.

“The Park School has a 40-year reputation as a leading, innovative and highly respected media and communications educational environment, and its vast alumni network includes some of the most influential leaders and creative professionals in the business,” said Orgel. “Now it has the opportunity to leverage the depth and breadth of its industry resources and relationships to further enhance the undergraduate and graduate curricula, build its interdisciplinary initiatives, expand the global nature of media and communications, explore the opportunities provided by new technologies, and emphasize media’s role in disseminating key messages about social responsibility. I’m excited about what lies ahead for our students, faculty and alumni as the Park School continues its leadership position in preparing emerging global media leaders.”

In addition to his role with 1Degree Media, Orgel serves as chairman of Global Media Group, which manages a select portfolio of media and entertainment companies. He is on the board of directors of Channel G, the philanthropy-centric media company; the Media Entertainment Technology Arts (META) association; and the Global Social Change Film Festival. Orgel is an invited speaker at numerous major media and entertainment industry events and is a frequent guest lecturer in the Park School. He most recently designed a long-term, interdisciplinary initiative and course, “Media for Social Change,” which focuses on media and communication’s responsibility in the areas of personal and social responsibility, sustainability and civic projects.

The Roy H. Park School of Communications offers bachelor’s degrees in television-radio; cinema and photography; integrated marketing communications; communication management and design; film, photography, and visual arts; documentary studies and production; and journalism as well as a master’s degree in communications.
