For Release Tuesday, September 8, 1998 Release #4439A

LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS NOW AVAILABLE TO COLLEGE STUDENTS

The Conference Board's Business Cycle Indicators database -- which includes the Leading Economic Indicators that are among the most widely-watched barometers of future economic trends -- is now available to students using two prominent undergraduate economic textbooks.

The Conference Board and Addison Wesley Longman, leading publisher of economic books, will offer this one-of-a-kind database through two widely-used economic textbooks: Abel and Bernanke's Macroeconomics, Fourth Edition, and Gordon's Macroeconomics, Seventh Edition..

"We are pleased to now offer to students the best parts of the cyclical indicators data we provide to economic forecasters and business planners throughout the world," says Michael Boldin, director of business cycle research at The Conference Board. "These indicators are a proven tool to measure both current conditions and predict the future direction of the economy. They will greatly enhance the understanding of economic relationships and help prepare students for the way actual data is used in both professional forecasting environments and general discussion about how the U.S. economy operates."

"The Conference Board's Business Cycle data is a great, compact source of macroeconomic data," says Ben Bernanke, a professor of economics and public affairs at Princeton University and co-author (with Andrew Abel of the University of Pennsylvania) of Macroeconomics. "It gives students easy access to timely, real-world numbers which increase economic literacy and help make classroom discussions come alive."

Students with the latest web-enabled edition of either the Abel/Bernanke or Gordon textbook will be able to register at the Addison Wesley Longman web site (http:/store.awl.com/coupon) for a password that will provide full access to the latest data for a six-month period.

Data in the BCI database cover critical aspects and sectors of the U.S. economy including: employment and related labor market conditions; consumer price indexes (CPI), producer price indexes (PPI), and commodity prices; Gross Domestic Product, income, wages, and personal consumption; industrial production, capacity, business sales, and orders for manufactured goods; interest rates and money supply data; consumer confidence and expectation indexes; and the composite leading, coincident, and lagging indexes.
